      Tremendous work from saxophonist Pepper Adams – quite possibly one of his most hard-blowing sets on record! The album's a live date, recorded at the legendary Five Spot – and the group here is a swinging one with plenty of soul jazz touches – a combo that includes a young Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Donald Byrd on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all playing.

Featuring in Mingus formations, he also led his own hard-bop dates, including a number of sessions with Donald Byrd.

      "Pepper Adams' Plays Charlie Mingus is a watershed album in Adams' long career. For starters, Mingus himself had a hand in the selection of material for the dates, along with Adams and vibist Teddy Charles. Next, the two dates here, September 9 and 12, , were recorded with two different bands.

      Of course, Volume 5 has the distinction of being the very first album to feature lyrics with Pepper Adams’ compositions. Where this recording breaks entirely new ground is the original way that Wallenstein’s poetry and Cole’s phrasing match Adams’ melody lines and thereby transform his ballads into timeless, unique art songs.

      This is however, a great Pepper Adams album. Recorded in in Los Angeles with west coast musicians, this is on the heels of Pepper winning the Downbeat New Star award. There is an expanded version, The Hollywood Quintet Sessions, combining two of these west coast sessions/5(6).
